Nevada County Time Bank

🕰️ Time Bank – Frequently Asked Questions

How is a time bank different from volunteering?
Time banking values everyone’s time equally. You earn credits for your time and use them to receive help from others. It’s mutual - not charity. If you would like to volunteer without receiving credits, please reach out to volunteer@nevadacountytimebank.com.

What kinds of services can I offer?
Almost anything! Gardening, childcare, tech support, cooking, editing, rides, organizing, art-making, and emotional support, to name a few. The only restriction is avoiding high-risk or licensed work (like electrical or tree removal).

Can I earn time by helping the time bank itself?
Yes! Supporting orientations, events, outreach, or peer support roles all earn you time credits.

I don’t have “special skills.” Can I still participate?
Absolutely. One of the best ways to get involved is through litter picking, either on your own or during our Community Care Days. We provide everything you need—litter pickers, bags, reflective vests, hard hats, and trash disposal. It's a simple, essential act of care that earns you time credits and helps keep our shared spaces clean.

You don’t need to be an expert to be a great neighbor. Offering companionship, running errands, or helping out at events also counts—there’s space for everyone here.

Is the time bank politically affiliated?
No. But we do recognize that everything is political—access, inclusion, justice—and welcome thoughtful conversations. We have zero tolerance for hate and bigotry.

What if I need help more than I can give right now?
That's okay. Time banks are built on reciprocity over time, not one-to-one exchanges. Please reach out to any admin regarding this subject and we have a fund specifically for this - this is part of how mutual aid works.

Can I exchange physical items or just services?
Yes and time can be credited based on effort or usefulness — just be clear in your negotiations.

What if someone doesn’t show up or things go wrong?
Stuff happens. Communicate honestly. If needed, ask a Peer Supporter for help sorting it out. In the event of an emergency, always call 911.

What if I’m not comfortable around a specific member?
You're never obligated to do an exchange. If safety or boundaries are a concern, contact a Peer Supporter or Contact Person for support - you can also email resolution@nevadacountytimebank.com and follow up via text or Channel DM with an admin.

Is there a limit to how many hours I can earn or spend?
Not really—but we encourage balance. If you’re holding a large time surplus or debt, let’s talk about how to redistribute or support you.

We’re not building something new. We’re putting a name to what we already know: we take care of us.
